What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL/TLS certificate is a digital certificate that establishes a secure, encrypted HTTPS connection between a site and the visitor's browser. When you have SSL, the site URL starts with https:// (not http://), a padlock icon appears in the browser, and all data (forms, passwords, cards) is encrypted. How does SSL/TLS encryption protect your site?
An SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer) is a digital certificate that establishes an encrypted connection between the web server and the visitor's browser. This encryption ensures that all data exchanged between the user and your site stays private and protected from unauthorized access.
When a site has an SSL certificate, the URL starts with HTTPS (instead of HTTP) and a padlock icon appears in the browser. This signals to visitors that the connection is secure and that they can safely enter personal data, passwords and payment information.
The process works like this: when a visitor accesses your site, the browser and server perform the so-called SSL handshake - an exchange of cryptographic keys that takes milliseconds. After that, all communication is encrypted with the AES-256 algorithm, which means that even if someone intercepts the data, they cannot read it without the decryption key.

Why does Google require HTTPS for all sites?
Back in 2014, Google confirmed that HTTPS is a ranking factor in search results. This means sites with an SSL certificate have an advantage over sites without one, all else being equal.
Since 2018, Google Chrome marks all sites without SSL as "Not Secure" in the address bar. This warning directly deters visitors - studies show that 85% of users will not continue with a purchase on a site flagged as insecure.
HTTPS is also a prerequisite for modern web technologies such as the HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 protocols that significantly speed up site loading. Without SSL, your site cannot use these protocols and is automatically slower than the competition.
