History of Lorem Ipsum text - From Cicero to modern web design
Lorem Ipsum has its roots in classical Roman philosophy. The original text comes from "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil) which the Roman philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero wrote in 45 BC. This work is a treatise on ethics and moral theory.
The standard Lorem Ipsum passage used since the 1500s reads: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua." This is actually an altered and shortened version of Cicero's original text from Section 1.10.32.
How did Lorem Ipsum enter the printing industry?
It is believed that an unknown printer in the 16th century took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. This text survived five centuries and the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
