What is a domain? Complete guide
Understand what an internet domain is, how DNS works, which extensions exist and how to choose the right one.
What is an Internet domain?
An Internet domain is the unique address of your website on the Internet (e.g. mysite.com). A domain is an easy-to-remember name that the DNS (Domain Name System) translates into the numeric IP address of a server. There are three main types: gTLD (generic — .com, .net, .org), new gTLD (.shop, .online, .io) and ccTLD (country-code — .us, .ca, .me). Prices at BeoHosting: .com = $16.30/year, .net = $17.31/year, .org = $19.35/year. BeoHosting registers .com domains instantly — they go live within minutes.

What is an Internet domain and how does it work?
An Internet domain (or domain name) is the unique address of your website on the Internet. Just like every house has a street address, every site on the Internet has its own domain — for example beohosting.com or mysite.com. The domain is what visitors type into the browser's address bar to reach your site.
Technically, every server on the Internet has a numeric IP address (e.g. 185.199.108.153). However, remembering numbers is impractical, so DNS (Domain Name System) was created — a system that translates easy-to-remember domain names into server IP addresses. DNS works like a phone book of the Internet. A domain by itself doesn't display the site — for that you also need web hosting, a service that stores your site's files on a server.
When you type beohosting.com into the browser, your computer first asks the DNS server: "What is the IP address for beohosting.com?". The DNS server replies with an IP address, and then your browser connects to that server and displays the site. The whole process takes less than a second.

How to choose the perfect domain for your site?
Choosing the right domain is an important step in building an online presence. The domain is the first impression visitors get of your site and business.
Keep it short and memorable
The ideal length is 6-14 characters. Shorter domains are easier to remember, type and share. Avoid long phrases and complex words.
Avoid hyphens and numbers
Hyphens and numbers make a domain harder to remember and to say out loud. People often forget the hyphen or replace a digit with a word. Stick to letters only.
Use keywords
If possible, include a keyword that describes your business. For example "denverflorist.com" tells visitors immediately what it's about and helps SEO.
Pick the right extension
For most businesses in the US and Canada, .com is the standard and the extension visitors expect. .net and .org are strong alternatives, while .io and .co are popular with startups and tech brands.
Check branding
Before registering, make sure the domain doesn't infringe on someone's trademark. Also check availability on social networks for a consistent brand.
Think long term
A domain is a long-term investment. Choose a name that will still be relevant in 10 years, even if your business focus changes. Avoid short-lived trends.
How to register a domain — step by step
Domain registration is a simple process that only takes a few minutes. Here are the steps for registering a domain with BeoHosting:
Check domain availability
Use our domain search to check whether your desired name is free. If it isn't, try a different extension or a variation of the name.
Pick an extension
Choose the TLD that best fits your needs — .com for most businesses, .org for nonprofits, or a specialized extension like .io or .shop.
Pick a registration period
Domains can be registered for 1 to 10 years. A longer period means you don't have to worry about renewal and is often cheaper per year.
Fill in owner details
Enter the domain owner's details (name, address, email, phone). WHOIS privacy keeps these details hidden from public lookups.
Complete payment
Choose a payment method and complete the transaction. The domain will be active within a few minutes to 24 hours, depending on the extension.
