What is an Internet domain?

An Internet domain is the unique address of your website on the Internet (e.g. mysite.com). A domain is an easy-to-remember name that the DNS (Domain Name System) translates into the numeric IP address of a server. There are three main types: gTLD (generic — .com, .net, .org), new gTLD (.shop, .online, .io) and ccTLD (country-code — .eu, .me, .co). Prices at BeoHosting: .com = €15.04/year, .net = €15.98/year, .org = €17.86/year. gTLD domains are registered within minutes.

  • Domain = the address of the website; hosting = the space where the website is stored
  • 3 types: gTLD (.com), new gTLD (.io, .shop), ccTLD (.eu, .me)
  • Price of a .com domain: €15.04/year | .net and .org: €15.98/year
  • Technically — the DNS system translates the domain into the server's IP address
  • BeoHosting registers .com, .net, .org and 500+ other extensions

What is an Internet domain and how does it work?

An Internet domain (or domain name) is the unique address of your website on the Internet. Just like every house has a street address, every site on the Internet has its own domain — for example beohosting.com or mysite.com. The domain is what visitors type into the browser's address bar to reach your site.

Technically, every server on the Internet has a numeric IP address (e.g. 185.199.108.153). However, remembering numbers is impractical, so DNS (Domain Name System) was created — a system that translates easy-to-remember domain names into server IP addresses. DNS works like a phone book of the Internet. A domain by itself doesn't display the site — for that you also need web hosting, a service that stores your site's files on a server.

When you type beohosting.com into the browser, your computer first asks the DNS server: "What is the IP address for beohosting.com?". The DNS server replies with an IP address, and then your browser connects to that server and displays the site. The whole process takes less than a second.

How to choose the perfect domain for your site?

Choosing the right domain is an important step in building an online presence. The domain is the first impression visitors get of your site and business.

Keep it short and memorable

The ideal length is 6-14 characters. Shorter domains are easier to remember, type and share. Avoid long phrases and complex words.

Avoid hyphens and numbers

Hyphens and numbers make a domain harder to remember and to say out loud. People often forget the hyphen or replace a digit with a word. Stick to letters only.

Use keywords

If possible, include a keyword that describes your business. For example "london-florist.com" tells visitors immediately what it's about and helps SEO.

Pick the right extension

For most businesses across the UK and Europe, .com is the standard and the most trusted choice. .net and .org are strong alternatives, while .eu is ideal if you operate across the European Union.

Check branding

Before registering, make sure the domain doesn't infringe on someone's trademark. Also check availability on social networks for a consistent brand.

Think long term

A domain is a long-term investment. Choose a name that will still be relevant in 10 years, even if your business focus changes. Avoid short-lived trends.

How to register a domain — step by step

Domain registration is a simple process that only takes a few minutes. Here are the steps for registering a domain with BeoHosting:

1

Check domain availability

Use our domain search to check whether your desired name is free. If it isn't, try a different extension or a variation of the name.

2

Pick an extension

Choose the TLD that best fits your needs — .com for global business, .net or .org as alternatives, or a specialised extension.

3

Pick a registration period

Domains can be registered for 1 to 10 years. A longer period means you don't have to worry about renewal and is often cheaper per year.

4

Fill in owner details

Enter the domain owner's details (name, address, email, phone). For standard gTLD domains no additional documents are required.

5

Complete payment

Choose a payment method and complete the transaction. The domain will be active within a few minutes to 24 hours, depending on the extension.

Frequently asked questions about domains

Answers to the most common questions about our services.

An Internet domain is the unique address of your website on the Internet (e.g. mysite.com). It's the name people type into a browser to reach your site. The domain replaces the server's numeric IP address with an easy-to-remember name — so instead of typing 185.199.108.153 you simply type mysite.com.

.com is a generic domain (gTLD) recognised worldwide and the default choice for most businesses. .net was originally intended for network and infrastructure providers but is now used broadly, while .org is associated with organisations, non-profits and communities. For commercial sites across the UK and Europe, .com is usually the best choice, with .net and .org as solid alternatives.

The price depends on the extension. A .com domain costs from €15.04 per year, .net and .org from €15.98, while specialised domains (.shop, .tech, .io) can cost more. BeoHosting offers competitive pricing for all popular domains with free WHOIS protection.

Yes — domain transfer is a simple process. You need the EPP code (authorization code) from your current registrar, the domain must be older than 60 days and must not be locked. BeoHosting performs the transfer for free and supports you throughout the whole process.

When a domain expires it goes through several phases: first a grace period (30 days) where you can renew at the regular price, then a redemption period (30 days) where renewal costs more. After that the domain is released and anyone can register it. BeoHosting sends reminders before expiry.

WHOIS protection is recommended because it hides your personal data (name, address, email, phone) from the public WHOIS database. Without it, spammers and scammers can easily get your contact info. BeoHosting includes free WHOIS protection for most domains.
