Free tool for SEO and due diligence

Domain Age Checker — Domain Age Lookup

Check how old a domain is, registration date, expiry date and registrar. Useful for SEO assessment, buying a second-hand domain and due diligence before a partnership.

TL;DR

How to check how old a domain is?

Domain Age Checker checks the age of a domain in 3 steps: 1) Enter the domain without https:// or www. 2) The tool queries the WHOIS database and finds the registration date, expiry date and registrar. 3) Shows the age in years, months and days, plus a badge (Very old >10 years, Established >5 years, Moderate >2 years, New <2 years). Most common use cases: SEO assessment (older domains have more authority), due diligence before buying a second-hand domain, verifying the age of a potential partner/client, competitive research.

  • Age in years, months and days
  • Registration, expiry and last update date
  • Registrar and nameservers for additional verification
  • Ideal for SEO assessment and due diligence

Why age matters

What does the age of a domain reveal?

Domain age affects SEO authority, user trust and brand credibility.

SEO authority

Older domains have had time to build a backlink profile and authority in the Google index.

User trust

A domain registered 10 years ago looks more reliable than a domain that is 2 months old.

Due diligence

Before a business partnership, check how long the company has owned the domain.

Buying a domain

Older domains with a history are more expensive but carry an SEO benefit.

Anti-fraud

A site registered 1 week ago with a premium offer = a sign of fraud.

Domain age and SEO — what does Google claim?

In 2008 Google officially confirmed (via John Mueller) that domain age „is not a significant SEO factor“. However, older domains often have better SEO because they have had time to: 1) collect a backlink profile, 2) build brand mentions, 3) show content consistency, 4) have a lower probability of being deindexed.

In practice, new domains need 6-12 months of a „sandbox“ period before Google starts to trust them. An older domain with a clean history (no penalties, no spam) starts with greater credibility from day 1.

When is it worth buying an old domain?

Buying an old domain makes sense if: 1) it has a clean history (check the archive at archive.org), 2) has relevant backlinks from quality sites, 3) has not been penalized by Google, 4) has a healthy DA/DR rating. Before buying, always use Domain Age Checker + Archive.org Wayback Machine + Ahrefs.

Red flags — when NOT to buy

Avoid a domain if: 1) it was a parking or PPC page for years, 2) has a history of spam (check Wayback Machine), 3) contained adult/illegal content, 4) was on a public „expired domain“ auction multiple times, 5) has unknown or suspicious backlinks.

Google officially claims that domain age „is not a significant SEO factor“. In practice, older domains have better SEO because they have built a backlink profile, brand mentions and content consistency over time. New domains often need 6-12 months of a „sandbox“ period before Google starts to trust them.

Before buying an old domain, check: 1) clean history on archive.org (Wayback Machine), 2) quality backlinks on Ahrefs/Moz, 3) that it was not penalized by Google, 4) healthy DA/DR rating, 5) that it was not on a public „expired“ auction multiple times. Red flags: parking for years, adult/illegal content, spam history.

Domain Age Checker assigns badges based on age: Very old (10+ years) = high SEO authority, Established (5-10 yrs) = solid credibility, Moderate (2-5 yrs) = SEO is being built, New (<2 yrs) = needs time to rank. Badges are indicative — the most important factors are content quality and backlink profile.

The last update date (Updated Date) shows when the WHOIS record was last updated — this can be a change of registrar, contact information, nameservers. If the domain was recently modified but registered years ago, it may mean it was just bought on the secondary market.

Yes. Queries go directly through our WHOIS API to registries — the domains you check are not stored in our database. Everything is 100% private and leaves no trace.
