DNS Settings

How to manage DNS records and nameservers.

Changing DNS records in cPanel

In cPanel go to Zone Editor. You can add, edit or delete DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV). To add a new record, click "Add Record", select the type and enter the values. Changes propagate within 24-48 hours.

Setting MX records for email

MX records determine which server receives email for your domain. In Zone Editor add an MX record with priority 0 and value mail.yourdomain.com. If you use an external email service (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365), enter their MX records.

How to add an A record for a domain

Log in to cPanel (yourdomain.com:2083) and open Zone Editor. Click "Manage" next to your domain, then "Add Record" and choose type "A". In the "Name" field enter the domain or subdomain, and in "Address" enter the server IP address. You can leave TTL at 14400 or reduce it to 300 for more frequent changes. Click "Save Record" - propagation takes up to 24-48 hours.

How to set up a CNAME record

A CNAME record acts as an alias - it points a subdomain to another domain instead of an IP address. In cPanel open Zone Editor, click "Manage" then "Add Record" with type "CNAME". In "Name" enter the subdomain (e.g. www), and in "CNAME" enter the target domain. Note: you cannot set CNAME on a root domain, only on subdomains.

How to add a TXT record

TXT records are used for SPF, DKIM, Google verification and similar purposes. In cPanel open Zone Editor, choose "Add Record" with type "TXT", enter the domain and in "TXT Data" paste the value provided by the service. Copy the entire value exactly as given. Save and check propagation after 1-2 hours.

How to check DNS propagation

After every DNS change it takes time for the new records to spread to DNS servers around the world. Open whatsmydns.net, enter the domain and choose the record type (A, CNAME, MX, TXT). Full propagation usually takes 24-48 hours. If you plan more frequent changes, reduce TTL to 300 seconds in Zone Editor before the change.

How to set up an SRV record

SRV records are used for services such as Microsoft Teams, SIP or XMPP. In cPanel open Zone Editor, click "Manage" then "Add Record" with type SRV. Fill in: Priority (e.g. 10), Weight (e.g. 1), Port (e.g. 443) and Target (target server address). In Name enter the format _service._protocol.domain.com (e.g. _sip._tcp.domain.com). Wait up to 24 hours for propagation.

How to set up an AAAA record for IPv6

An AAAA record connects a domain to a server IPv6 address. In cPanel open Zone Editor, click "Manage" then "Add Record" with type AAAA. In Name enter the domain or subdomain, in Address enter the IPv6 address. Click "Save Record". You can use AAAA records in parallel with A records to make your site available over both IPv4 and IPv6.

How to change DNS record TTL value

TTL (Time To Live) defines how long DNS servers cache your record. Default value is 14400 seconds (4 hours). In Zone Editor click "Edit" on the record and change TTL - for normal operation 14400, before planned changes reduce to 300 (5 minutes). Lower TTL 24-48 hours before a planned change. After the change propagates, return TTL to the standard value.

How to set up DNS for Google Workspace

In cPanel open Zone Editor. Delete existing MX records, then add Google MX: ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM (priority 1), ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM (5), ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM (5). Add an SPF TXT record: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all. For DKIM, copy the key from the Google Admin console and add it as a TXT record with the name google._domainkey. Also add DMARC TXT with name _dmarc and value: v=DMARC1; p=quarantine.

How to set up DNS for Microsoft 365

Add an MX record with priority 0 and value yourdomain-com.mail.protection.outlook.com. Add a CNAME autodiscover pointing to autodiscover.outlook.com. For SPF: v=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all. DKIM is activated from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center - you will receive two CNAME records (selector1 and selector2). After all records, verify the domain in the Microsoft 365 panel.

How to set up reverse DNS (PTR record)

A PTR record links an IP address with a domain and is crucial for mail servers. You cannot set PTR records yourself because they are controlled by the hosting provider. Open a ticket in our support system with the IP address and domain. Our team will set up the PTR within 24 hours. Check the current PTR at mxtoolbox.com/ReverseLookup.

How to use Cloudflare DNS with BeoHosting

Register an account at cloudflare.com and add your domain. Verify that the A record points to the IP of your BeoHosting account. Change the nameservers at your registrar to the ones Cloudflare assigns. SSL: choose Full (Strict). Turn on the orange cloud (Proxy) for the site but turn it off for mail subdomains. You now make DNS changes in Cloudflare, not in cPanel.

How to fix DNS SERVFAIL error

SERVFAIL means the DNS server cannot resolve the domain. Check the nameservers at the registrar - for BeoHosting: ns1.beohosting.com and ns2.beohosting.com. Use whatsmydns.net to verify. If they are correct, contact support to check the zone file. A common cause is a recent nameserver change - wait 24-48 hours. Also check if the domain has expired.
